about

Listening to the lyrics of I Can’t Complain, you'd think it was written in 2020 about Trump era American social and political issues.
Originally written after the 2008 election of President Barack Obama, as a piece of social commentary. The song I Can’t Complain speaks from the point of view of three young black men in the throes of minority communities that are disenfranchised by policies created by American political parties. In this song, the artists paint rhythmic scenes of jagged memories of their communities during President George W. Bush’s administration.
This song, although written in 2008, is still extremely relevant and timely due to all of the events that transpired during the 2016 - 2020 Trump administration. There are glimpses of hope offered as the second verse celebrates the defeat of the republican party by President Obama, which echoes again today with the success of President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
I Can’t Complain is an affirmation echoed by four young poets Chen Lo, Hitman, Michael K Success, and LaAerial as they wax poetic over this grungy Brooklyn hip hop groove.

lyrics

I gotta thank him everyday so no I won’t complain yea yea
Cause I got food to eat, and I got a roof over my head
So no no I won’t no I won’t complain
(I aint got no time to waist complaining it’s the way it is)

I can’t complain cause others had it worse in the game
I’m sayin, smothered in slave ships they shackled and chained
Yea its true we still hated and we put to the flame
But I’m here living and breathing success on the brain
It’s recession and depression y’all we stuck in the rain
Everybody on their grizzle tryina hustle for change
Like nothin done changed seemingly we stuck in our ways
Leave the future never living for tomorrow today
I don’t want a handout, I’ll do whatever it takes
I’m trying to eat so it’s a lot of challenges ima face
You busy talking while I’m walking son I’m gettin it done
You burn easy in the summer duke I’m I’m one with the sun
How I look to be complaining a descendant of slaves
If I was on it I’d be haunted have them turning in graves
So I’m counting all my blessings and I’m counting the days
Til I get what I deserve and what my grandmother prayed I can’t complain

(I aint got no time to waist complaining it’s the way it is)
Gotta be strong like my ancestors were back in the days

In the streets I compete with the struggle
Keep my eyes open I don’t sleep on the struggle
Premaddonas lurking I don’t beef with the struggle
Or end up in something deeper than trouble
Hustling in my veins flow straight through my muscle
Fighter in the brain taught straight through my knuckles
Survival in the game, I move so subtle
Straight through the tunnel on track like the shuttle
Hate to burst your bubble but recession was in office
Prevented cash flow money slow like a tortoise
I won’t grab my ski mask, I think about my choices
To move through the system so smoothly flawless
So i’ma keep running faster than a pro skater
Hotter than a radiator body rap assassinator
I go KU Ku for the paper thank god for democracy
Republicans out the door no apologies whaaaa

I can nono complain no no no no no no
Cause they did back in the days more than we doing today
So I can’t complain
(I aint got no time to waist complaining it’s the way it is)

Yea things been screwed since republican rule
New millennium many debts accrued
Talk gettin cheaper don’t pay no dues
I’m looking for new ways, just like you
We in the same pool diving deep for clues
I know mad dudes chose to tote the tool.
But I keep it straight got to much to lose
Common sense relate to the hood we grew
Lord have mercy trying to keep my cool
In the projects you learn the golden rule
Keep your mouth shut with the boys in blue
Cause drama magnetize bring the heat to you
For real, you can’t cook don’t ignite the fuel
You recession got us stressed y’all be lookin like food
You bargain about your doe, break the bread my dude
We all carnivores, we put the sauce on you and eat It up

(I aint got no time to waist complaining it’s the way it is)
I won’t complain No No No
I won’t complain
(I aint got no time to waist complaining it’s the way it is)
Got food on my table and a roof on my head
So I got nothing to complain about instead I’ll be grateful
For what I have yes what I have
And most of all I have love yea
As long as I have love i’ma be alright
i’ma be alright
Yeah
So I wont’ complain I wont’ complain
No no no no
